Like most millennials, I work all day and then just want to come home and crawl in bed. This leads to a back up of household chores and adulting to be done. Whether it’s the weekend or a much needed day off work, I look forward to any day I get to spend at home and I typically don’t want to spend it being responsible. However, my avoidant behavior does nothing for the laundry climbing the wall, so I try my best to be sure I have productive days when I’m home. My theory is that if I can get everything done, I can sit around and do nothing; so I stick to some guidelines to make my days at home more productive. Since you all are my online besties, I want to share my tips with all of you:

3 Tips to Make a Day at Home More Productive

  1. Prioritize what needs to be done. I swear my list of things needing to be done is never ending and it can be a little overwhelming. I make my tasks a little less daunting by prioritizing what needs to be done and making a to-do list. I typically start with whatever will take the longest and be the hardest, getting this out of the way makes me feel good about myself and brings me relief knowing the worse is over. I also try to do laundry while I do other things.
  2. Avoid social media. I have a tendency to tell myself I’m just going to check Instagram for 5 minutes and the next thing I know it’s been an hour, I’ve checked all of my social media, and I’ve reasoned that I can watch one episode of a show then I’ll get back to my to-do list. In order to make a day at home more productive, you have to avoid social media. Since we all seem to suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out), you may need to take measures to make sure you CAN’T get on social media. Sites/apps like Freedom are great tools that literally block you from access social media and the internet.
  3. Take scheduled breaks. In my opinion, this is the most important tip. I can’t go for prolonged periods without taking mental breaks for a few minutes. Some people work for 30 minutes and then take a 5 minute break. I prefer to accomplish a few tasks and then take break. For example, I may start a load of laundry, clean both bathrooms, send any emails I need to, and then take a 45 minute break to watch a show. I always run the risk of not getting back up when the episode ends, BUT I can usually bribe myself with a reward for getting up. My breaks and rewards are truly my key to making my days at home more productive.

The next time your dishes are falling out of the sink and laundry is basically meeting you at the door, remember that you’re not alone. Your best friend is probably also stepping over clothes. I know adulting can be exhausting, but nothing feels better than checking everything off your to-do list and relaxing without a care in the world. These 3 tips will help you make the most of the days you have at home so that you can come home from work and truly relax.

  1. These are great tips. I feel like besides social media, turning on the TV always gets me in trouble! I love the idea of scheduled breaks. I think that would be super helpful for me.
