How my BGLO changed my life

Approximately 5.5 years ago, on April 22nd, 2010 I was initiated into the best Black Greek Lettered Organization (BGLO) known to mankind (yes, it’s that great), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Delta Sigma Theta was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 13th, 1913 by 22 women wanting to promote academic excellence and social justice. Since its founding, Delta Sigma Theta has been trail blazing and expanding its reach globally. The sorority currently has over 1,000 collegiate and alumni chapters within the states and more than 200,000 proud members.

The Tau Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, was chartered on April 30th, 2004 on the campus of The University of Miami by 17 SAGAcious Divas. Since’s it’s introduction to UM’s campus, the TP Divas have received highly esteemed honors such as inductions into Iron Arrow Honor Society (the university’s highest honor), Mortar Board, Rho Lambda, and several other accolades. TP Divas are the women often seen leading the pack both in and out of the classroom. We pride ourselves on upholding the organization-wide commitment to bettering the community.

The Royal Guide to Time Management

If any of you are anything like me, saying that you’re busy doesn’t even begin to properly describe your life. Between graduate school, working a full-time job, being an after-school nanny, my part-time job at Mastermind MGT, blogging, and all of my other obligations there is almost ALWAYS something that needs to be done. When I factor in needing to have time to myself and spending time with other people (The Boy, my family, etc.), it’s easy to get overwhelmed, say screw it all, and pour a glass of wine. Unfortunately, that approach comes back to bite me in the long run and simply delays everything which has to be done. I keep on top of everything by planning ahead, staying extremely organized, and utilizing what I consider advanced time management skills. I figure the most effective way to convey how I get everything done would be to share what a typical week day looks like for me and the tools I use to survey them. (more…)

Friend or Acquaintance?

For those that have been keeping up with Royalty In Reality, you know that my 26th birthday is just around the corner. I’ve started to get the “so what are the plans for your birthday” texts and it has caused me to deeply consider the people I want to celebrate with. While I’m having trouble deciding exactly what I want to do, I know I don’t want my guests getting hit with high gratuity charges because I’ve invited everyone in my contacts list. Trying to narrow down the guest list really got me thinking about my relationships with people and contemplating the difference between a friend and an acquaintance. (more…)

The Royal Guide to the Health Insurance Marketplace

With my 26th birthday just a few weeks away (Hey Scorpios!!) I have been forced to start contemplating what I’m going to do about healthcare coverage. Thanks to the Obama administration’s Affordable Care Act, we are all allowed to stay on a parent’s health insurance until the age of 26, after that you’re SOL and have to get on your own plan or face a penalty. Being a public health student and future doctor it was an easy decision to seek coverage, as oppose to paying the penalty, but where was I suppose to start? (more…)

Mother ALWAYS knows best

When I was a teenager, I definitely thought my mom was trying to ruin my life. Our most memorable rift was over a boy (duh) I just knew I was going to spend the rest of my life with. He was the literally the boy next door and represented everything the boys at my boring private school did not. He was older, had “street cred”, was adorably shy, and man was he handsome. At first, even my mom couldn’t get enough of the boy next door, but eventually his bad boy ways caught up to our fairytale romance. She banned me from any and all communication and told us both she had no problem burying us in the backyard because she’d kill us both before the relationship carried on. I vividly remember being “heartbroken” and calling myself being sneaky so that we could carry on this secret love affair. Eventually, he messed up even more and I realized that my mom had been right all along. He was indeed really handsome and had a sweet personality, but his life choices were not those of a man I should spend my life with. Mom-1, Roxy-0. (more…)
